The Baton Rouge Rugby Football Club won its fourth consecutive Texas Rugby Union
match of the season against no losses this past weekend as it defeated the Bay
Area Rugby Club 23 - 3 in Clear Lake, Texas. The Baton Rouge team traveled
with a strong contingent of 31 available players for the two matches. The A side
match was played on a muddy pitch in cool temperatures which considerably slowed
the pace of the game and reduced the speed advantage of the smaller, faster
Baton Rouge backs. However, the Baton Rouge forwards went head to head
with the experienced Bay Area pack and carved out a slim 11 - 3 lead 15 minutes
before half. With the match still very much in doubt, Baton Rouge fought
off a Bay Area attack and then put a dagger through the heart of the home side
20 seconds before half with a try of their own to stretch the advantage to 16 -
3. Nether side was able to accomplish much in the second half as Baton
Rouge played a field position game bottling up Bay Area in their own end as the
field conditions worsened. Baton Rouge scored with 8 minutes remaining to
make the final score 23 -3. The Baton Rouge A side is 9 - 2 on the year
and 4 - 0 in the Texas Rugby Union, Division 2-A.The Baton Rouge B side
dominated from start to finish and recorded a solid 22 - 0 victory over Bay
Area's B side. Baton Rouge B is 6 - 0 on the year and 4 - 0 in the Texas
Rugby Union, Division 2-B.Baton Rouge will face New Orleans Rugby Football Club
on Saturday, February 7, at 2:00pm at the BREC Highland Road Park. The
competition between these two in-state rivals is always a spirited affair.
The public is invited.
