The
Baton Rouge Rugby Club continued their winning ways as they defeated the
Arlington Mavericks Rugby Football Club 65 - 7 in a Texas Rugby Union (TRU)
match played on Saturday at BREC Highland Road Park. The Mavericks are the
defending TRU Division II champions, but they brought an under strength
side to Baton Rouge and were simply not able to contain the division leading
Baton Rouge side. Baton Rouge broke open the match late in the first half
and held a 38 - 7 lead at intermission. Baton Rouge built upon their lead
in the second half as they were able to bring on fresh players to face the
tiring Texans. In the previous meeting between these two sides, Arlington
had narrowly defeated Baton Rouge in the 2003 TRU Division II final. Baton
Rouge is 8 - 2 on the year and 3 - 0 in TRU competition. Arlington dropped
to 1 - 2 in the TRU.
The Baton Rouge 'B' side won an exciting 42 - 27 victory over the University of
Louisiana - Lafayette. This was a wide open match that went back and forth
until the final whistle with Baton Rouge's experience tipping the balance
against the enthusiastic collegians. Baton Rouge 'B' is undefeated at 5 -
0 on the year.
Baton Rouge will travel to the Baytown/Clear Lake, Texas area on Saturday,
January 31, to face the Bay Area Rugby Football Club. Bay Area is an old
rival and has historically been very tough when playing at home. Baton
Rouge won last year's match 13 - 6 in the mud to claim the final spot in the TRU
playoffs
