The Baton Rouge Rugby Football Club got off to a solid start in the 2004-2005 season this past Saturday as it defeated the Jackson, MS Rugby Football Club 52 - 7 in the A-side match which was played on a very hot afternoon at Highland Road Park.  After a sluggish start, Baton Rouge scored four consecutive trys before yielding Jackson's only try just before the half.  The heat and Baton Rouge's depth began to tell on the visitors in the second half as Baton Rouge scored four more trys.  The victory was the first for new head coach, Doug Schooling, formerly of Capetown, South Africa.  The club has many new players this year who contributed in the match.
A combined Baton Rouge A and B sides defeated LSU Rugby Football Club in the second match by a score of 35 - 21.  LSU's small, speedy team struggled to maintain its share of possession against Baton Rouge, but nevertheless kept the match close until the final 10 minutes when Baton Rouge scored two unanswered trys.
The next match is against Houston Area Rugby Club on Saturday, October 23 at BREC Highland Road Park.  Match time is 2:00 pm.  The public is invited.
