Sirs:

The Baton Rouge Rugby Club recorded its second win of the 2004-2005 season this past weekend by defeating the Houston Area Rugby Club 29 - 17 at Highland Road Park.  Houston utilized its superior size and organization in the forwards to pressure Baton Rouge early and eventually scored the first try to lead 7 - 0 after 15 minutes.  Baton Rouge responded with a try of its own several minutes later to make the score 7 - 5.  Houston scored again to take a 12 - 5 lead, but Baton Rouge tied the score at 12 - 12 in the final minute of the  first half on the strength of some fine back play.  Baton Rouge began the second half with a try to take a 17 - 12 lead as some of the new player combinations began to pay dividends.  However, Houston's big pack pressured Baton Rouge again to tie the score at 17 - 17 with 15 minutes left. Baton Rouge withstood some more Houston pressure on its line and then, after a period of sustained possession in the Houston half, took the lead 24 - 17 with 10 minutes to go.  The final 10 minutes belonged to Baton Rouge as they added an insurance try to make the final score 29 -17.
The match was a non-league match, but was significant in that it was Baton Rouge's first win over a Division 1 team in many years.  Houston had beaten Baton Rouge 47 - 17 in Houston in December 2003.

Baton Rouge will play against the Battleship Rugby Football Club this Saturday in Mobile, Alabama.
