The Baton Rouge Rugby Club endured an
ordeal by fire over the past weekend as it competed in the Premier Division of the 26th
Annual Battleship Rugby Tournament in Mobile, Alabama. After an impressive 33 - 5
opening match win over Houston Area Rugby Club, Baton Rouge faced former US National
Champion Life University in the second round. Baton Rouge accepted the challenge and
controlled long stretches of the match, but in the end, Life was simply too good and won
by a score of 34 - 0. Sunday's match pitted Baton Rouge against a deep and even more
talented Gypsies Touring Side and produced a similar result to Saturday's match vs Life.
The good news is that Baton Rouge can be competitive for portions of a match
against competition of the highest quality. The bad news is that Baton Rouge can be
competitive for only portions of the match. Many lessons were well learned that will
payoff later in the season vs Division II competition. Baton Rouge's record is level
at 3 wins and 3 losses for the season. The Club will be in action again on Saturday,
November 20 vs New Orleans at the Parade Grounds on the LSU campus. The match time is
11:30 a.m.
