The Baton Rouge Rugby Football Club won its second match of
the 2003-04 season without a loss when it defeated the New Orleans Rugby Football Club
20-13 in a match played Saturday on the LSU Parade Grounds prior to the LSU-Auburn
football game.
The match attracted supporters of both clubs as well as many interested onlookers who were on campus for the LSU-Auburn pre-game festivities. They saw a hard fought match between rival clubs that wasn't decided until the final whistle. Baton Rouge scored first and held the lead throughout the match, although New Orleans had an opportunity to take the lead with a three point penalty kick with less than five minutes remaining. However, the kick at goal was wide due in part to a sudden gust of wind. Baton Rouge nailed down the victory with a five point try with less than a minute remaining in the match. It was the first time in three years that Baton Rouge had defeated their in-state rivals.
